F-13

Simple applique.

I decided to use the "freezer paper inside" method because I think it makes placement of the pieces easier.

Cut a 6" x6" square out of your background fabric.

Print or trace the block pattern onto freezer paper and cut out the shapes.

Place these shapes on your main fabric and cut out, leaving a seam allowance all around. I left about 1/4".
Place the freezer paper shapes shiny side up on the wrong side of the fabric shapes.

Fold the seam allowances over and, using a warm, dry iron, iron them to the shiny side of the freezer paper. Be careful not to touch the exposed freezer paper with the iron. I have one of those little Clover mini irons which works wonderfully for this.

Mark the position of the circles on the 6" background fabric square.

Baste the circles in position and applique all the way around each.

Turn the block over and cut a slit into the back of each circle, through the background fabric only. Pull the freezer paper out through this hole. Press the block.

Mark the shape of the melons onto the block.

Baste the melons into position and applique.
Remove the freezer paper the same way you did for the circles.
Press the block and trim it to 5" square.

(This block looks much better in real life than in this photo. As you may have seen on the news, we're drowning over here and the light is just awful.)
